Connecting Electricity to Pond Equipment

Electricity can be dangerous and in the presence of water is potentially even more dangerous. Recognising this, new legislation was introduced at the beginning of 2005 which restricts the amount of fixed electrical installation work that can be carried out by other than qualified electricians.
Our Armadillo and PowerBreaker products offer ways that you can safely connect power to your pond equipment within the new regulations.
One requirement is that all outdoor supplies must be protected by a Residual Current Device. RCD's reduce the risk of electrocution from a damaged or broken mains cable.
Power Breaker RCD Power Breaker RCD (GRE002)
This RCD is designed to be hard wired (the cable is directly wired in to the RCD). This ensures perminent protection.

Safety Sure RCD Safety Sure RCD (GRE001)
This RCD is designed to be used in between a Plug and a poer socket. This allow you to plug in any outdoor equipment. These are ideal for using with portable equipment such as a Pondovac or lawnmower.

Armadillo Pond Connection Unit Armadillo Pond Connection Unit(GRE062)
RCD adaptors and plugs are not ideal for connecting to pond equipment since they trip in the event of a power cut and need manually resetting when the power to your house is restored. The weatherproof Pond Connection Unit has an in built RCD that does not need resetting after a power cut. The PCU can be mounted on an outside wall and comes with 3m of flexible cable, so it can be plugged into a convenient socket in the house or garage.

Other features include -

Clear lid to give to give visibility of the re-assuring power-on indicator.

The cover can be padlocked - to ensure that no one tampers with it (Padlock not supplied).

In -built fuse to match the requirements of your pump.

Two separate power cables can be connected.

Armadillo Pond Connection Unit - Extension Cables Armadillo Pond Connection Unit - Extension Cables(GRE11x)
When your pond is close to the Pond Connection Unit the cables can be connected directly. When it is further away and the cables have to be buried, then Armadillo Armoured Extension Cables are recommended. These meet the Regulation's requirement for using armoured cable. The Extension Cable is fully pre-assembled and tested one end of the cable has a weatherproof junction box for connecting to your pond equipment. The other end connects directly into the Pond Connection Unit. Extension cables are available in three pre-assembled lengths.

Outdoor Socket Kit Outdoor Socket Kit(GRE06x)
The Armadillo Outdoor Socket Kits allow you to install 13A weatherproof sockets within the restrictions of the Regulations - since they simply plug into a convenient indoor socket using an RCD plug. Everything you need is supplied including clear instructions. All Armadillo sockets are fully weatherproof even with the plug inserted. Kit includes Powerbreaker RCD Plug, 3m of suitable cable single or double outdoor socket, fittings and installation instructions

Armadillo Outdoor Socket System Armadillo Outdoor Socket System(GRE06y)
When weatherproof sockets are required further into the garden, then the Outdoor Socket System meets this requirement. It is a fully assembled armoured cable with a twin socket on one end and a junction box on the other - which has 3m of flexible cable connected to it. The junction box is mounted on the wall and the flexible cable passes indoors and plugs into a convenient socket with an RCD plug (The RCD plug must be ordered separately see above).
The Outdoor Socket System is fully tested and approved to BS5733 and can be installed within the requirements of the new regulations (provided the clear instructions are followed).
The Outdoor Socket System is available in two lengths 5m and 10m. Socket Systems can be "daisy-chained" down the garden by plugging the second into the first etc. The maximum power that can be taken from all sockets is 3kW (13A). A fuse in the RCD plug protects the system from overloading.
